If you need to store your opal away for a period of time, simply place it in a padded cloth bag for protection and store it away. For longer storage periods, place your opal in cotton wool with a few drops of water, then into a sealed plastic bag just to be safe.

Condensation can turn the resin cloudy. Place the jar in a ordinary slow cooker filled with enough water so the jar dose not float.
Can you hand polish an opal?
Hand polishing opal without machines is simpler than you might think; with some sandpaper, a knife hone, a piece of leather, and a bit of elbow grease, you could uncover a gem!
How do you test at home if an opal is real?
From a side view, a real opal should look solid. Doublets and triplets, however, will look layered. Doublets have only two layers: the real opal and the non-opal layer attached to it. You should be able to see a thin, regular line where the two layers are joined together.
