How do you start a reciprocating pump?

Pump Start-up Procedure

  1. Line up the pump valves.
  2. Ensure that the drain valve is closed.
  3. Open the suction valve.
  4. Open the vent valve to bleed off gases – when liquid comes from the vent valve – close it again.
  5. Open the gland-seal valve (if fitted).
  6. Commission the bearing and oil cooling systems (if fitted).

How do I start my water pump for the first time?

First start-up of the water pump

  1. Close the delivery hose / garden hose / discharge hose / pipe a few metres away from the pump.
  2. Turn on the pump by inserting the plug into the socket.
  3. The pump will now start drawing in water from the source.

What is the operation of a reciprocating pump?

The working of reciprocating pump is as follows: When the power source is connected to crank, the crank will start rotating and connecting rod also displaced along with crank. When the crank moves inwards or towards the cylinder, the piston will move towards its left and compresses the liquid in the cylinder.

Is priming required for reciprocating pump?

Priming is the process in which the impeller of a centrifugal pump will get fully submerged in liquid without any air trap inside. This is especially required when there is the first startup. But it is advisable to start the pump only after primping. The reciprocating pump is self-priming.

How cavitation occurs in reciprocating pump?

Two basic types of cavitation exist in reciprocating pumps: Suction cavitation can result from obstructed, clogged, or otherwise dysfunctional inlet pipes. When the inlet pipe’s optimal flow is hampered, vapor cavities form near the retracting plunger. Disregard of net positive suction head (NPSH) guidelines.

What is a pump start?

A pump start relay is an electrical device that allows your irrigation timer to control the pump. This device is imperative when you are using a pump to supply water to your irrigation system.

What type of flow does reciprocating pump have?

Explanation: The reciprocating pump has a continuous flow. It has a constant discharge even if head on the delivery side varies. Explanation: The reciprocating pump runs at a low speed. Its speed is less than 30m/min.

Why Priming is important in reciprocating pumps?

Its suction and discharge valves are not opened or closed periodically. So priming is necessary to remove air or gases from piping and pump body to reduce the phenomena of Gaseous Cavitation. Pump is called in air bourne condition and requied flow will not achieved if air or gas is present in suction or pump body.

What is the start up procedure of a a pump?

A pump is a device that moves fluids (liquids or gases), or sometimes slurries, by mechanical action. If the pump has recycle line then keep recycle control valve full open and then start the pump and slowly open discharge valve by monitoring discharge pressure What is the Reciprocating pump start up procedure? Line up the pump valves.

Can you start a reciprocating pump with the discharge block valve closed?

Thus no reciprocating pump should ever be started or operated with the discharge block valve closed. Flow is regulated by speed. In rare cases that require a discharge throttle valve, an automatic bypass valve that is piped back to the suction source must be provided.

How does a positive displacement reciprocating pump work?

Reciprocating (Positive Displacement) Pumps A reciprocating pump utilizes a crankshaft-connecting rod mechanism identical to internal combustion engines. The crankshaft-connecting rod mechanism converts the rotary movement of the crankshaft to a reciprocating linear movement of plungers or pistons.

What are the different types of reciprocating pumps?

There are three types of mechanism defined reciprocating pumps: piston, plunger and diaphragm or bellows. Valves at each end of the volume alternately close and open to isolate the higher pressure volume from the suction on the compression stroke and the higher pressure discharge from the volume on the return stroke.
