How do you reduce pump cavitation?

Some tips to prevent cavitation due to vaporization include:

  1. NPSHa > NPSHr + 3 ft or more safety margin.
  2. Lower temperature.
  3. Raise liquid level in suction vessel.
  4. Change out pump type.
  5. Reduce motor RPM.
  6. Use impeller inducer.
  7. Increase diameter of the eye of impeller.

What are the symptoms of cavitation? The obvious symptoms of cavitation are noise and vibration. When bubbles of vapour implode they can make a series of bubbling, crackling, sounds as if gravel is rattling around the pump housing or pipework.

How does cavitation occur in a pump?

Cavitation occurs in a pump when the temperature and pressure of the liquid at the suction of the impeller equals the vapor pressure. It can happen at low pressures and normal operating temperatures. Locally, it results in the liquid turning to a vapor and creating very high temperatures and pressures.

Open a restricted discharge valve on the pump

  • Operating too close to shut-off head
  • A closed discharge valve
  • An over-pressurized header
  • Unclog the downstream filter
  • Assess pressure at the discharge line

    Cavitation occurs when the volume of hydraulic fluid demanded by any part of a hydraulic circuit exceeds the volume of fluid being supplied. This causes the absolute pressure in that part of the circuit to fall below the vapor pressure of the hydraulic fluid.
