Your command will have notified the IRS of your deployment to a combat zone but you may want to notify the IRS directly through its special e-mail address. E-mail the deployed member’s name, stateside address, date of birth, and date of deployment to [email protected] or call the IRS main helpline at 800-829-1040.

Do Army Soldiers file taxes?

Active-duty service members file state income taxes in their state of legal residence. Military service members are not required to change their legal residence when they move to a new state solely because of military orders; they may maintain their legal residence in a state where they have previously established it.

Generally, the IRS classifies income by where it is earned. So if you are living and working abroad, then your income is considered to be foreign earned income, even if you are being paid by a US company. The opposite is true as well. If you are working in the US, your earnings are considered to be US earned income.
