How do I extend the life of my water heater?

Your typical water heater maintenance schedule is as follows:

  1. Test the temperature relief valve at least once per year.
  2. Flush your water heater every 4 months.
  3. Clean your water heater tank once per year.
  4. Replace your anode rod every 2-5 years.
  5. For gas water heaters: check the burner every year.

Does water softener help water heater?

A softener WILL reduce mineral buildup inside pipes & plumbing fixtures. It will also reduce sediment buildup inside the water heater making it more efficient.

Do I need to flush my water heater if I have a water softener?

If you have a water softener between your main supply line and the water, there should also be a supply shut-off valve there. The goal is to avoid having the heater turn on once all the water is drained out, especially for natural gas heaters, because heating it without water can damage the tank.

The type of water heater and where you are located: While many say 8 to 12 years is the expected life for a standard gas-powered water heater, this range can change and be very dependent on where you are located. The level of sediment in your tank affects the lifespan of your water heater.

Are water softeners bad for plumbing?

Generally, soft water is better for your pipes. A water softener can help prevent plumbing damage by removing the excess minerals from the water.

Are water softeners worth it?

Yes. Soft water makes a huge difference when it comes to the longevity and performance of your appliances. Using soft water with your everyday appliances helps reduce wear and tear on them. Because a water softener prevents scale build-up in the pipes and on faucets, it increases their longevity and working power.

Should you drink softened water?

Softened water is considered safe to drink in the majority of cases. But the softener salt is only used to soften the resin that acts on the water – no salt gets into the water supply itself. In softened water, the sodium level increases. Sodium is not the same as salt (sodium chloride).
