How did growing up with a pet in your life impact the person you are today?

While some of my early pets were unusual, companion animals play major roles in the lives of many children. While some of the findings are mixed, the authors concluded that growing up with pets is linked to higher self-esteem, cognitive development, and social skills.

Are pets important in one’s life?

They help us gain a sense of responsibility, show us unconditional love, and are always there when we need them. Pets provide companionship and reduce loneliness; they help people cope with stress better, lowering blood pressure and helping reduce cholesterol — in some cases at least as effectively as medication. They lower the risk of heart attacks; one study found that cat ownership could cut the risks of a stroke by a third.
