How can you tell if a fabric is lightweight?
Ounce per square yard (oz/sq2) is the imperial measurement which is also commonly used. A lightweight fabric is typically between 30- 150 GSM, medium weight 150-350 GSM and heavyweight 350+ GSM, such as our clear window PVC (640 GSM), although this can vary depending on the type of fabric.
How can you tell what weight a fabric is?
When manufacturers calculate fabric weight, they take a standard-sized piece of material (often a square yard) and weigh that on a scale. This will then yield the GSM, or grams per square yard, of the fabric.
What is heavyweight cotton fabric?
Heavyweight cotton, as the name would suggest, is denser and heavier than other cotton materials, and creates a more durable, sturdy product. Cotton is measured in ounces per square yard, and heavyweight cotton is usually 12 ounces or heavier.
What is the lightest weight fabric?
The most popular lightweight fabric by far is cotton. Half of all the fabric produced in the world is cotton, and for good reason. Suitable for all climates, the breathability of cotton makes it especially useful when it’s hot out, in both wet and dry heat.
How is fabric GSM tested?
Method:
- Cut 5 swatches from the different places of the fabric.
- Weight all test swatches accurately and calculate the average weight of swatches.
- Multiply the average weight of swatches by 100 to calculate the GSM of the sample fabric. (Normally, the area of round GSM cutter is 1/100 square meters.)
What is GSM fabric weight?
GSM stands for grams per square meter, and is a standard measurement for fabric weight. The cutter allows us to cut out a perfect circle with an area of 100 cm, and the scale precisely measures the weight of the little fabric circle. We can then multiply that number by 100 to get the GSM of the fabric.
What is the thinnest fabric material?
The World’s Thinnest Fabric Fairy Feather is made from 8-denier silk microfibers that are only one-sixth as thick as a human hair (about 50 deniers).
How do you find the GSM of a non woven fabric?
Does the weight of a fabric determine its quality?
Fabric thickness. The heavier the weight, generally the thicker the fabric will be, although bear in mind that the weight does not tell you how thick the fabric is. Fabrics with different fibres or weaves but with the same weight may not have the exact same thickness. Fabric quality. The weight of a material does not always determine its quality.
What is the difference between lightweight and heavy weight fabrics?
Fabric weight will indicate how thick your material is. For example, a 50 to 150 GSM fabric is considered lightweight, and lightweight fabrics are very thin. 150 to 350 GSM is medium eight fabric and the material is not as thick as heavy weight material and not as thin as lightweight.

What is fabfabric weight?
Fabric weight is the outcome of how a fabric has been woven, its finish and sometimes the fibre type. Looking at the weight can help you to decide if it will be the most suitable fabric for its end use.
