How can we change the direction of rotation of a DC shunt motor?
The direction of rotation of DC shunt motor can be reversed by reversing either field terminals or armature terminals but not both. The torque can be changed by changing either field flux or armature current. Hence the motor will rotate in the same direction by changing the supply connections.
What happens if you reverse the connection of field coil of a generator which at present builds up when brought to full speed?
When we rotate the generator in reverse direction, flux due to residual magnetism will be cancelled out and hence generator will not get sufficient initial flux for emf build up.
What happens when the field is removed from a shunt connected DC motor?
Open Shunt Field If the shunt field suddenly opens while the motor is being operated under full-load conditions, only a small voltage due to the residual magnetism of the pole pieces will be induced into the armature. Current will increase considerably.
What will happen to the direction of rotation of a DC shunt motor if armature terminals are reversed?
When both (the direction of the field as well as that of armature current) are reversed the direction of rotation will not change. So in the case of DC shunt motor, if the supply terminals are interchanged, there is no change in the direction of rotation.
Which connections must be changed to reverse the direction of rotation of a DC motor?
The direction of rotation of a dc motor can be reversed by reversing the connections of either the armature or the field winding connection with the supply.
What happens if shunt field connections is reversed in the generator?
The motor will run in reverse direction. The motor will run at its normal speed in the same direction as before. The motor will stop. The motor will run much faster in the same direction.
How does a shunt generator build up?
Consider a shunt generator in which the field winding is connected in parallel with the armature, thus armature voltage supplies the field current. This field current increases the magnetic flux in the generator. The increase in the flux increases the generated voltage E0.
When the shunt field winding is directly connected across the armature terminals it is called?
(iii) Compound-wound motor which has two field windings; one connected in parallel with the armature and the other in series with it. There are two types of compound motor connections (like generators). When the shunt field winding is directly connected across the armature terminals it is called short-shunt connection.
How do you reverse the rotation direction of a DC series motor List 2 ways and explain?
The direction of rotation of DC series motor may be reversed by changing the polarity of the either field or the armature winding. You need access to the field terminals S1 and S2 and armature terminals A1 and A2 on the motor.
How does a shunt DC motor work?
The field winding in shunt DC motors is made of many windings of thin wire, to both increase the magnetic field’s strength and limit the current through the coil. By doing so, the current is reduced through the field coil and thus increases in the armature (remember, the current is shared when in parallel).
How is the field winding wired in a DC motor?
Notice how the field winding is wired in parallel with the rotor assembly – this is the defining feature of shunt DC motors. The field winding, which produces the constant magnetic field in the stator, is wired in parallel, or in shunt, with the armature windings in shunt DC motors.
How are the field coils connected to the motor?
The field coils are connected in series with the armature of the motor. The illustration shows three diagrams to provide visual explanation on how the external wiring leads are connected in relation to the internal components of the motor.
What is compound DC motor connection?
Compound DC Motor Connection – The method of connection for a compound wound direct current motor is shown in figure 3 below. This type of DC motor combines both series field and shunt field included as part of the internal components of the motor.
