How are subway cars connected?

Most subways are closed systems — they don’t connect to other train networks, so cars can’t just be driven along tracks until they hit the subway. Here’s how new cars for the NYC subway system get loaded onto the tracks. Video courtesy of MTA.

How do they get subway trains underground?

Cut and Cover. With the cut and cover method, the pavement of the street is removed, and a hole for the subways and stations are dug and built. Afterward, the street is put back into place, leaving the tunnel underground. Most of the New York Subway system was built utilizing this method.

How are subway cars delivered?

Currently, the R142A and R143 Kawasaki cars are being delivered by flatbed truck to the 207th Street Yard in Manhattan where they are loaded onto the tracks and towed by diesel locomotive to their prepping location (East 180th Street Yard for the R142A’s and East New York Yard for the R143’s).

How are subway trains powered?

Subways get their power through an exposed electrical line known as the third rail, which runs alongside the two rails the train cars ride on. Subways do not use gas-fueled combustion engines because the exhaust in the enclosed subway tunnels and stations would cause carbon monoxide poisoning to riders.

Can you walk between train cars?

With most matched multiple-units, it is possible, as with locomotive towed carriages, to walk from one unit to another, but a passage between adjacent cabbed ends of coupled trains is less common.

How does a train car coupler work?

Today’s standard freight-car coupler is the Type E, a Janney “clasped-hand” device that couples automatically when one or both knuckles are open and cars are pushed together. Lifting the lever unlocks the knuckle and lets it swing open, allowing the cars to be pulled away from each other.

Can subway tunnels collapse?

How are subway tunnels built underwater?

Q service runs express on Broadway (except late nights), stopping at 42 St-Times Sq, 34 St-Herald Sq, 14 St-Union Sq, and Canal St. Late nights, the Q runs local between 96 St and Coney Island-Stillwell Av via the Manhattan Bridge. Train always operates and always stops here.

Do subway tracks electrocute?

Watch the third rail. The city’s subway tracks are lined with a lethal third rail, which powers subway cars with enough electricity to kill a person in an instant. In safety training, transit workers are instructed to never walk between the third rail and the main running rail.
