How are military MOS assigned?

Who Gets An MOS? All recruits will be assigned a job at some point, but when and how depends greatly on circumstances. You may be offered a chance to select a military job by the recruiter, but some recruits don’t enter boot camp with a “guaranteed job” and must select their MOS or AFSC, etc.

Can you choose your MOS as an Army officer?

While officers have a MOS, they are chosen into their branch first – infantry, armor, aviation, field artillery, air defense artillery, etc. While cadets are at West Point, ROTC, and OCS, they submit their three branch choices. The DA will make its selection based on the cadets’ performance and the needs of the Army.

How do MOS work?

An MOS is the role or job someone had while in the military. There are over 10,000 different occupational specialties across the military that cover a whole range of skillsets and levels of responsibility. Perhaps the best way to think of an MOS is the same way you would think about someone’s college major.

Do I get to choose my MOS?

You may request an MOS, but unless that MOS is specifically in your enlistment contract, and you fulfill all the requirements for that MOS; the Marine Corps will assign your MOS based upon your aptitude and desires; but mostly upon the needs of the Marine Corps.

Can officers change their MOS?

Yes, active component Army officers may transfer from one branch to another, but there are a number of hurdles to get over if one wishes to transfer voluntarily. Generally, one can only change branches voluntarily when it is in the best interest of the Army.

Do you choose your MOS at MEPS?

At MEPS, you will take the ASVAB, choose your MOS and take a physical. If you pass the ASVAB and physical, you will be able to swear into the military on that same day. Some of the military branches will ask you to head to basic training after you have completed MEPS. Your recruiter will prepare you for this process.

How long is MOS training?

As such, AIT is different for each available Army career path, or Military Occupational Specialty (MOS). AIT courses can last anywhere from 4 weeks to 7 months, and possibly more for foreign language training.
