How accurate is a side mounted scope?

With a properly zeroed, side-mounted scope, an accurately fired round will meet line-of-sight only once, at the target. A side-mount has a larger margin of error because, if improperly zeroed for elevation, the round will miss high or low AND miss left or right.

Why do rifle scope lose zero?

When the gun and scope “”lose zero”, there are several things that may have happened. First and foremost, the wind may have shifted, either in speed or direction. This will cause a zeroed rifle to start missing the target, mostly left or right. (There is some component of up/down too, but let’s ignore that).

How do offset sights work?

As their name implies, offset backup iron sights are not in line with the typical sight plane, but are instead mounted on the side of a rifle at a high 45-degree angle, in either a folding or fixed configuration. In this case, the backup irons will be placed backward on the rifle, meaning flip ups will fold forward.

Are Russian Optics good?

The Russian devices are of the very best quality, very rugged, and range from simple hand-held monoculars (at left) and binoculars, through head-strap goggles, to third generation rifle scopes now issued to the Russian special forces (but those cannot be exported from Russia).

Do scopes go bad?

It doesn’t happen often, but when your optics go awry, you need to act decisively. Scope problems in the field can be insidious, and if you suspect you have a problem and can’t isolate it, sometimes you’re better off borrowing another rifle.

Are offset sights any good?

Offset irons can be especially advantageous if your optic device suddenly breaks, as that can seriously dampen your inline sights’ effectiveness. More importantly, offset sights make it feasible to go between short and medium/long-range target without having to fiddle with your optic mount.

Why are Russian optics so good?
