Nearly everyone’s spinal discs show signs of wear as they age. Not everyone, however, will have degenerative disc disease. Not actually a disease, this is a condition in which a damaged disc causes pain. A wide range of symptoms and severity is associated with this condition.

Anyone can get scoliosis. However, the most common type usually occurs in children age 11 and older. Girls are more likely than boys to have this type of scoliosis.

How common is mild scoliosis?

About one in every two people is thought to have mild scoliosis, which is painless, does not worsen and does not need treatment. However, severe scoliosis is a painful and debilitating condition that tends to worsen with age. About three children out of every 1000 have scoliosis that needs medical treatment.

Usually the curve is mild and doesn’t affect your appearance or health. Yet it can get worse over time. It can also cause back pain and other health problems. Scoliosis can affect children or adults.

What is thoracic scoliosis?

Thoracic scoliosis refers to a sideways curve located in the middle (or thoracic) portion of the spine. Scoliosis occurs in the thoracic area more than in other areas. These scoliosis patients notice changes to their chest, rib cage, and shoulder blades appearance.

Is it possible to correct mild scoliosis?

Mild scoliosis is often managed simply with exercise, medical observation, scoliosis-specific physical therapy, and chiropractic treatment from a chiropractic scoliosis specialist. For some people with scoliosis, yoga or pilates is also recommended to decrease their pain level and increase flexibility.

Is it normal to have a slight curve in your spine?

A normal spine has a gentle and slight curve on it. While viewing it from the back, it should run straight through the middle. Abnormal curves may appear anywhere along the spine and tend to curve with greater angles than they are supposed to be.
