Does burning fossil fuels reduce oxygen?

Burning fossil fuels is the largest contributor to the declining level of oxygen in the atmosphere, according to the latest research by Chinese scientists.

Does burning fossil fuels add or remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere?

Burning any carbon based fuel converts carbon to carbon dioxide. Burning fossil fuels releases carbon that was removed from the amosphere millions of years ago by animal and plant life. This leads to increased concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

How does fossil fuel use increase carbon dioxide in the atmosphere?

When fossil fuels are combusted (burned), oxygen combines with carbon to form CO2 and with hydrogen to form water (H2O). These reactions release heat, which we use for energy. For example, for the same amount of energy produced, burning natural gas produces about half of the amount of CO2 produced by burning coal.

How do we know that increases in atmospheric CO2 concentrations come at least in part from combustion of fossil fuel?

Another, quite independent way that we know that fossil fuel burning and land clearing specifically are responsible for the increase in CO2 in the last 150 years is through the measurement of carbon isotopes.

Why is oxygen in the atmosphere decreasing?

Oxygen levels are decreasing globally due to fossil-fuel burning. The changes are too small to have an impact on human health, but are of interest to the study of climate change and carbon dioxide.

What causes the increase in atmospheric CO2 in recent years?

On Earth, human activities are changing the natural greenhouse. Over the last century the burning of fossil fuels like coal and oil has increased the concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2). This happens because the coal or oil burning process combines carbon with oxygen in the air to make CO2.

Why doesnt the level of oxygen in the atmosphere decrease?

All human beings, plants and animals utilize oxygen present in the atmosphere for respiration. Yet, the percentage of oxygen in the atmosphere is constant for many years and does not decrease because the green plants which are capable of photosynthesis take up CO2 from the atmosphere and produce O2 in return.
