Do you have to be pretty and skinny to model?
Tall, slender and beautiful models are typically hired for high fashion. The British Association of Model Agents (AMA) explains that a female model’s height should reach between 5’8” and 5’11” with a 6-8 dress size and a 34″-24″-34″ bust, waist and hip measurement. Anything above this is classed as plus-size.

A taller stature offers a commanding presence at runway shows, and so this is ideal for designers who want their work to be noticed. Longer legs, a tiny waist and relatively small breasts have become the industry standard for runway models.
Does weight matter for modeling?
Weight is one of the last things an agency considers. However, the exception to this rule is in fashion/runway modeling. Because that part of the modeling industry is so size specific in regards to clothes and sample sizes, then yes weight will play a part.
Why do models have to be so tall?
Fashion agreed on the taller women because they are more visible on the runway. And all designers use the same parameters so all the models must be able to fit every dress. THAT is the reason they are tall and thin. If they were all sizes, it would make it nearly impossible to ever get the collection shown.
Are models supposed to be thin?
Although the perception is that the majority of modern models are very thin, many are of normal weight, and are supported by weight minimum policies in some parts of the industry. The size of fashion models starts with the way the designer designs the clothing.
How tall do runway models have to be?
Runway models should be at least 5’8” as a female and 6’0” as a male. For editorial modeling, having the right look is more important than height or slender frame alone. For convention/promotional models, it’s more about having an engaging personality and the ability to act as a product spokesperson.
