Do you get your old passport back India?
In case of passport reissue, the new passport will be released while the old passport will be cancelled and returned. However, any of the active visas on the old passport will still be valid and can be used till expiry of the particular visa.
Do old passports get returned?
Yes, in most cases, we will return the old, canceled passport to you. The old passport may be sent separately from your new passport. We recommend keeping your old passport in a safe place as it is considered proof of your U.S. citizenship.
Why do they return your old passport?
The US will accept your expired passport as a valid form of identification. Your old passport can still prove your identity and legal status. A birth certificate can serve a similar function, but it does not have a photo, so a passport is always better.
Is it necessary to keep old passport?

Is an out of date passport still a valid form of ID?
We can only accept a passport that is valid and within its expiry date. This would be the same for any Identification documents. All would need to be within their expiry dates.
