After Navy boot camp graduation, Sailors will not be given leave and are required to travel to their next training location, A School. There are many locations for Navy A School, and not all Sailors will go to the same school.
Sailors in eligible skills are able to leave the service up to two years early — often with as little as two years of service. Early out quotas are set monthly by enlisted community managers who publish those vacancies on the Navy Personnel Command Web page.
Can you leave the Navy whenever you want?

- Separation qualified as “honorable” or “general” (under honorable conditions)
- Agrees to serve at least three years in the Ready Reserve following separation.
- Discharged involuntarily because of being denied reenlistment (under certain conditions)
How do you get emergency leave in the Navy?
Emergency leave should be granted whenever the circumstances warrant, based on the judgment of the commanding officer and the desire of the member.
Can I get out of my Navy contract?
Sometimes the military offers members the opportunity to get out of their contract early. In some cases, members will be allowed to simply leave their contract and go on their merry way. However, members often incur a service commitment to the Guard or Reserves if they leave active duty early.
