Do Paladins have to worship a God 5e?

A Paladin does not need to have any faith whatsoever in 5e. In older editions they did, but in 5e they swear an Oath to the universe so powerful that they are granted special powers. That Oath can de to a specific deity, but doesn’t have to.

No, a cleric doesn’t need to worship a god. Eberron has a couple religions that don’t have any kind of divine entity at all, and the gods of that setting (probably) don’t even actually exist.

A paladin sage can combine aspects of the fighter and cleric to create a character who is dedicated to maintaining their physical strength, but backs up that strength with a zealous understanding of the cause they champion. Paladins in 5th edition are not so much tied to a specific god as a moral code.

SPELLS. Clerics know 3 cantrips and a number of spells equal to their Wisdom modifier + their character level. The reason for this is that each domain offers 2 spells at 1st level that best reflect the nature of those gods. These spells don’t take up any of your prepared spell slots and you ALWAYS know them.

Do clerics have to be lawful?

No, they do not. Your Cleric can be whatever alignment their deity allows.

Generally speaking, in modern Christianity, Protestant and some independent Catholic churches allow for ordained clergy to marry after ordination.

Can a Paladin be a cleric of a god?

As with many points of confusion in 5e, looking at it from the viewpoint of previous editions is the major problem here. The only reason to believe that a god’s involvement is necessary for a paladin is because it was, although even in 3.5e (for example), you could be a cleric or paladin of a causerather than a god.

The reason paladins don’t have anything in the way of divine connection is that 5e paladins are no more connected to their god than the average believer. They get their power through their oaths and the strength of their character, not from an outside power.

Have the player make a roll appropriate to the situation, and then give them an appropriate hint. (Since the paladin has no particular divine intervention ability, narrate it appropriately. If they roll low, I’d say something like “you pray, but your God is silent.
