Do animators draw everything?

Drawing is always something that has been closely related to animation. In the early days of animation everything was 2D, so everything had to be hand drawn. As you already know, if you’re animating in 3D you’re really not drawing at all. Instead you’re posing a puppet, in much the same way stop motion is done.

How were cartoons made before computers?

In very early cartoons made before the use of the cel, such as Gertie the Dinosaur (1914), the entire frame, including the background and all characters and items, were drawn on a single sheet of paper, then photographed. Everything had to be redrawn for each frame containing movements.

The animators don’t redraw everything for every frame. Instead, each frame is built from layers of drawings. The cartoon characters are drawn on clear film, so the background shows through. The part of the character that is moving – the mouth, the arms – may also be drawn as a separate layer.

How do animators draw the same?

A peg bar is an animation tool used in traditional (cel) animation to keep the drawings in place. The pins in the peg bar match the holes in the paper. It is attached to the animation desk or light table, depending on which is being used.
