Why do dogs wag their tails? Most, but not all, dogs have tails. Some breeds such as Australian Shepherds and Pembroke Welsh Corgis are born with nubby little flaps of fatty tissue, where the tail should be happily waving. Most experienced dog owners know dogs use their tails to communicate.

Why some dogs have no tail?

The reason some breeds and not others are docked is simply because of the fashion set for that particular breed. Each breed has an arbitrary standard for where the tail should be cut off. The RSPCA is opposed to the cosmetic tail docking of dogs because the procedure is unnecessary and compromises the welfare of dogs.

Dogs that are born without tails or with small ones fall under the category of bobtailed breeds. Responsible for the most known bobtail breeds is an ancestral T-box gene mutation (C189G). Dogs with a bobtail are naturally born with this trait and should not be confused with docking.

Do poodles have tails?

Some dogs, particularly many working dog breeds, were required to have docked tails by this breed standard. All Poodles (Standard, Miniature and Toy Poodle) fall under this rule. In the European Union tail docking has been banned since 1998. All Poodles coming from Europe have long, natural tails.

Rottweilers get their tails docked so that the tail won’t be caught when pulling carts, grabbed when fighting off an assailant, or bitten or stepped on by livestock when herding. People may also choose to dock their Rottweiler’s tail for aesthetics, for dog shows, or to avoid damage to their home.
