Can you strike the back of the head in MMA?

Punches to the Back of the Head Punching the back of the head is dangerous, and it could potentially cause severe damage to a fighter. Thus, it is not allowed.

Why are punches to the back of the head illegal in MMA?

Because striking to the back of the head means striking the extremely vulnerable area of the brain stem, and if hit hard enough (or if the person is unlucky enough) it can cause serious neurological damage or death, and is much, MUCH more likely to do so than a punch to virtually any other area of the body.
