Can you put distributor cap on wrong?
Registered. The dist cap only fits on one way. It has a notch that fits to the distributor. You would break the cap and/or not be able to clip it on.

The rotor under the distributor cap should be pointing at the lead that connects to that spark plug — if not, start with this one and work your way round in the firing order. Not all distributors go the same way round and not all have the same firing order!

As it rotates it passes a spark though to each of the spark plug wires that are plugged into the top of the distributor cap.

If you are exactly 180 degrees out when the plug fires you will have open valves, which could get a bit messy as well as noisey since any unburnt fuel in the cylinder would get ignited. I can’t imagine it would even try to start since there is now way it would get any compression.

How do you tell if your distributor is 180 out?
You can determine if it is 180 out by removing #1 plug and placing your finger/thumb over the hole. (Temporarily remove the wire from the coil first) Have someone “tap” the starter and you will feel pressure trying to to blow your finger away. This is the compression stroke. Note the direction of engine rotation.
