For a cartilage piercing, the healing period is 12 weeks. Be sure to keep those timeframes in mind if your season is about to start. If your new piercing is fully-healed, we recommend removing your earrings – as any other jewelry – before participating in a sport.
Can you tape newly pierced ears for sports?
Taping. Some athletes with new body piercings use tape to cover the jewelry during sporting events. While this tactic does remove some risk, it is not always a good solution. Tape does prevent earrings and other jewelry from getting caught on clothing and equipment by providing a smooth surface.
Can piercings heal with retainers?
Nope. Retainers are a different size and shape than the normal jewelry. They are for temporary use in fully healed piercings.

- Use waterproof, flexible bandaids as piercing tape.
- Cut the bandaid to size.
- Fold the bandaid over the piercing so it contacts the surrounding skin by a few millimeters.
- Remove the bandaid after sports and clean the piercing.
