Can you make your own clarinet reeds?

There are many advantages to making clarinet reeds by hand. Commercial reeds are cut by machines the same way with extreme precision. This method is not advantageous for all blanks since no two pieces of cane are exactly alike.

How do you make a homemade reed?

Making a reed by hand

  1. First, split a cane of common reed into four sections of equal length.
  2. Strip the bark at the center.
  3. Cut the long edges to produce a boat-like shape.
  4. Score the reed at the center and fold it into two, and make vertical incisions on the part of the cane where the bark remains.

Cane vs synthetic: Clarinet reeds have historically been made using cane (Arundo donax), a naturally growing material similar to bamboo, but some companies have recently developed reeds made from synthetic materials which aren’t as prone to changes due to environmental variables.
