Can you have error codes without check engine light?

Yes it can. Some codes are unrelated to the engine/emissions systems and don’t cause the check engine light to come on.

Why is my check engine light off but code still there?

The problem that triggered the code may not have happened enough times to illuminate the light. This most likely means the issue is not critical and that the code is pending. So if the check engine light is off, but you see an error code, use an OBD2 scanner to help identify what the problem is.

What’s the difference between stored codes and pending codes?

For a quick answer though, the difference between stored and pending codes is simple. Stored codes are put in place from the manufacturer to signal the computer when a common fault is detected. Pending codes are codes that prep themselves when they determine a fault that engine cycle.

Can you clear a pending code?

You can get a code readers at just about any auto parts, you can erase the code but not the problem. Even if you erase the code, it’s only temporally and it will come back. The inspection stations reader will still read the code and see that there is something wrong with the engine, and the engine will not pass.
