What is the difference between an MRI and MRA?

Both an MRI and MRA are noninvasive and painless diagnostic tools used to view tissues, bones, or organs inside the body. An MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) creates detailed images of organs and tissues. An MRA (magnetic resonance angiography) focuses more on the blood vessels than the tissue surrounding it.

Can an MRA without contrast detect an aneurysm?

Even though this method has many advantages for imaging the body and the extracranial blood vessels, it is not widely used for imaging intracranial vessels. The preferred method of imaging intracranial aneurysms with MRA is the 3D TOF technique, since it provides high-quality images, without contrast administration.

Can an MRA detect an aneurysm?

Magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) is a noninvasive technique for vascular imaging1–3 and is thus widely used to screen for intracranial vascular lesions. Previous studies have suggested that MRA could identify aneurysms measuring >3 mm in size4–6 with a high sensitivity of 74\% to 98\%.

What does an MRI of head show?

MRI can detect a variety of conditions of the brain such as cysts, tumors, bleeding, swelling, developmental and structural abnormalities, infections, inflammatory conditions, or problems with the blood vessels. It can determine if a shunt is working and detect damage to the brain caused by an injury or a stroke.

Can an MRI detect aneurysm?

A brain aneurysm is usually diagnosed using an MRI scan and angiography (MRA), or a CT scan and angiography (CTA). An MRI scan is usually used to look for aneurysms in the brain that haven’t ruptured. This type of scan uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed images of your brain.
