Can you get a PhD during undergraduate?
In the United States, a Master’s degree is not required for admission to most PhD programs. It is possible and not unusual to be admitted to a PhD program straight out of undergrad. This means that they will have to do a five to seven year PhD on top of their one to three year Master’s.

Stanford GSE offers all admitted PhD students a five-year funding guarantee that provides tuition aid, fellowship stipend, and assistantship salary, and covers the standard cost of attendance below. There is no separate application for this funding.

What is a special student at MIT?
A special student is a non-degree student who is admitted to take classes at MIT. This status does not lead to the completion of a degree, and does not further the student’s chances of gaining admission in the future. Applicants must apply through the dedicated channel in order to be considered.
