Can whales return to land?

Eventually, mammals evolved on land. Cetaceans, which include dolphins, whales, and other marine mammals, then evolved from land-dwelling creatures, going back into the water. Some believe this change has made it unlikely for cetaceans to revert back to life on land again.

What happened to whales legs?

Between 41 million and 50 million years ago, whales’ hind limbs did shrink greatly as the former land animals began a return to the sea. But their legs showed no change in the basic arrangement and number of bones, which proved that Sonic Hedgehog was still functioning. Its loss must have come later.

How did whales end up in water?

Both hippos and whales evolved from four-legged, even-toed, hoofed (ungulate) ancestors that lived on land about 50 million years ago. Unlike the hippo’s ancestor, whale ancestors moved to the sea and evolved into swimming creatures over a period of about 8 million years.

How did whales evolve back into the ocean?

From land mammals to marine mammals, many adaptations were needed. Whales evolved from early land mammals, adapting to life in the oceans by losing their hind-limbs, growing a flat tail, developing flippers, and streamlining their bodies.

How did whales evolve back in the ocean?

Since the hind limbs were a mere 2 feet long and the whole body was 50 feet long, the discoverers concluded that the legs could not have supported the body on land or assisted in swimming. This fossil whale had passed the point of intermediacy, and so the search continued.

Do whales have good hearing underwater?

Those who have developed good underwater hearing have the best chances of survival, especially species that worry about potential predators. Over the course of evolution, whales (or rather their ancestors) have evolved and adapted their physiology from living and walking on land to living solely in the ocean.
