Can I use a gravel bike for a road race?

Road riding on a gravel bike? Unless you’re racing, we’ve found them to be plenty fast enough, while being nice and comfortable as well. If you want to go touring, no problem, gravel bikes often have plenty of mounts for all your luggage and trendy Instagramable accessories.

Is 32mm enough for gravel?

Yes – 32 is fine. You might need to be careful on potholes and the like if you are running tubes. 32mm is more than adequate. I do a fair amount of gravel-grinding on 25mm Conti 4000s.

Is a gravel bike really worth it?

Gravel bikes are totally worth it because they’re just fun! With a gravel bike, you can go just about anywhere, ride just about any road, and enjoy almost any exciting adventure you choose.

Why is gravel racing so popular?

One of the main reasons why so many gravel riders are former road converts is the lack of safety on paved roads. You can ride down a gravel road for hours without seeing any cars, or even people. Sticking to such roads means having more fun, being more relaxed, and generally enjoying the cycling experience a lot more.

How fast can you go on a gravel bike?

Many gravel bikes these days have a 1x (single chainring) set up in the front. You’ll still get plenty of gears for most road riding, but you won’t have quite enough high gears for when the speeds gets very fast, like 26 mph to 30 mph or faster. You’ll probably spin out, because you can’t pedal fast enough.

Can a gravel bike use the same riding position as a racing bike?

There is no reason why a gravel bike couldn’t use the same riding position as a racing bike (above). After all, gravel roads are roads, and there is no need to change the position just because the ground is a bit rougher.

Why are gravel tires slower than road tires?

There are a few things that can make a gravel tire slower: Aerodynamics of the bike: Wider tires catch a tiny bit more wind, but a 10 mm increase in frontal area doesn’t make a huge difference. Otherwise, steel frames with skinny tubes would be faster than carbon bikes with large-diameter down tubes.

What makes a good gravel bike tire?

Rolling resistance: Most gravel tires today are built like mountain bike tires, with stiff casings that absorb more energy and transmit more shocks than supple racing tires.
