Can I take medicine while fasting in Islam?

Muslims who observe the fast will refrain from consuming anything by mouth between dawn and sunset, including food, water, and oral medications. Non-oral meds-injections, inhalers, suppositories, and eye or ear drops-are generally permissible.

Is it permissible to take medicine while fasting?

As a rule, from a halakhic point of view, medicines that are not administered by mouth, such as ointments and creams, inhalations to the respiratory tract, suppositories etc., may be taken during the fast. However, the patient’s physician should be consulted to confirm their suitability for patient.

Do not take aspirin or paracetamol as this may aggravate symptoms of dehydration. Islam does not require you to harm yourself to fulfil the fast. If you need to break a fast due to health reasons, this can be compensated for by fasting once you are well again.
