Can anything burn in a vacuum?

Fires can’t start in space itself because there is no oxygen – or indeed anything else – in a vacuum. Yet inside the confines of spacecraft, and freed from gravity, flames behave in strange and beautiful ways. They burn at cooler temperatures, in unfamiliar shapes and are powered by unusual chemistry.

Can gas burn in a vacuum?

Fire is a different beast in space than it is on the ground. When flames burn on Earth, heated gases rise from the fire, drawing oxygen in and pushing combustion products out. In microgravity, hot gases don’t rise. Space flames can also burn at a lower temperature and with less oxygen than fires on Earth.

Would wood burn in a vacuum?

If you heat wood, the water boils away first and then the lignin and cellulose (both long-chain organic molecules) will react with oxygen and burn. Even in a vacuum, these molecular chains are too long and tangled to wiggle free into the liquid phase before they reach temperatures high enough to break their bonds.

Can gun powder burn in a vacuum?

“Classic” Gunpowder is made from Sulfur, Charcoal, and Saltpeter. The first two ingredients are fuel, the last one is an oxidizer, so this mixture supplies its own oxygen. If it’s properly ignited, it’ll burn just fine in a vacuum.

Can fire make a vacuum?

A: Contrary to popular belief, lighting a match in a bottle does not create a vacuum by using up oxygen. Although the flame burns up oxygen, it produces an equal quantity of carbon dioxide, another gas.

Can you heat up a vacuum?

You cannot heat vacuum because heat requires a medium to propagate. In the absence of a medium, heat transfer won’t take place either by conduction or by convection. The only possible way to transfer heat is via infrared rays.

What happens to wood in a vacuum chamber?

In vacuum drying of wood, the boiling point of water is reduced by drawing a vacuum, allowing for drying at lower temperatures than conventional drying. Thus, the benefits of high-temperature drying are achieved, i.e., less warp and much reduced drying time [9], but at lower temperatures [10].

Do guns work in vacuums?

Yes, guns can shoot in a vacuum. The cartridge contains an oxidizer that provides oxygen for the bullet to be fired. So atmospheric oxygen is not required. Due to the lack of air resistance in a vacuum, the bullet will most likely go faster & further.
