Can anyone use the British Library?
Everyone can use our Reading Rooms for study and research, and you don’t need to pre-book. You just need a Reader Pass, and you’re in. You must wear a face covering when using our Reading Rooms, including when seated at your desk, unless you’re exempt. Anyone not wearing a face covering may be asked to leave.
Is British Library open to public?
We’re open for everyone. All our Reading Rooms and galleries have now reopened, and we’re restarting events in our Knowledge Centre Theatre. We’re so excited to see you. You can now use our public desks and Members’ Room, and visit our Treasures Gallery without needing to pre-book a ticket.

How do I borrow books from the Library London?
Search the online catalogue (Catalyst) and select items to be posted to you. You can also borrow by email by requesting items at [email protected]. You can collect books at the Library or browse the stacks and take out items at the Issue Desk.
Can you take photos in the British Library?
Photography around the building Visitors to the British Library are welcome to take photographs in our public areas. However photography is not permitted in the exhibition spaces or Reading Rooms. Flash photography should also be avoided around the King’s Library.
Can you borrow books from libraries?
The first thing you’ll need is an account with your public or university library. If you plan to visit the library and borrow books, you need a physical card; if you just want to borrow ebooks, some libraries offer a virtual library card instead.
