Contrary to popular belief, narcissists show codependent symptoms. Narcissists (people with Narcissistic Personality Disorder) and codependents are usually considered opposites, but surprisingly, though their outward behavior may differ, they share many psychological traits.

Do narcissists struggle with empathy?

The narcissist struggles mightily with being empathic. A major flaw in the relationship often becomes evident when life circumstances or therapy requires one partner to function empathically towards the other. In fact many relationship breakdowns emerge when empathy is desired.

Someone who has codependency traits demonstrates low self-esteem, a desire to take care of others, poor boundaries, and a need to please others. The narcissistic partner needs someone else to boost their self-esteem while the codependent partner is more than willing to serve in this role.

Codependency in relationships can be extremely toxic, especially to the individual who is struggling with the codependent issues. A codependent person tends to make their relationship more important than anything else—including their own well-being.

People lack normal empathy, or the ability to feel what others are feeling, when something has gone wrong in their brains. It might be the result of a genetic defect, or physical damage due to trauma, or a response to their environment.

Ignoring a narcissist will enrage them because of their fragile egos. They’ll feel humiliated and lash out against you to protect themselves.

People who are codependent have low self-esteem and a lack of self-worth, and are generally attracted to people who need them. Codependents enjoy being needed. I think that in general, they are very caring and giving.
