Are there area codes for mobile phones?

Telephone numbers in Canada follow the fixed-length Bell System format, consisting of the country code +1, followed by a three-digit area code, a three-digit central office code (or exchange code) and a four-digit station code. This is represented as 1 NPA NXX XXXX, in which the country code is “1”.

917 was the original NYC cell phone number — briefly an equalizer, since it covered all five boroughs, and showed you had a cell phone. As a result, 917, 718, 646, 347 and even 212 can now attach to a landline or a cell phone.

Why do some phone numbers have a plus 1?

When writing phone numbers, a “+” in the first position means the next one to three digits denote the country code. Therefore, “+1” means that the phone number belongs to NANP. In other words, the phone number is somewhere in North America.

How do area codes on phone numbers work?

The NANP divides the territories of its members into numbering plan areas (NPAs) which are encoded numerically with a three-digit telephone number prefix, commonly called the area code. Each telephone is assigned a seven-digit telephone number unique only within its respective numbering plan area.

Why do some areas have more than one area code?

Under the NANP, three-digit prefixes were assigned to specific geographic areas. This began with a group of 86 Numbering Plan Areas, or NPAs. Giving these area codes to the two metropolitan areas customers were most likely to be calling meant less work for rotary phone-dialers.
