Is it worth trying to write a book?
If your story fits the first category, then go for it. Simple stories can be very powerful and very popular, and anything in the first category makes a good first book on which to hone your writing skills. Even if it never gets published, it’s worth writing just as a learning experience.
Are there authors who don’t read?
No. Writers are amalgamations of the books they have read. No writer can write without first learning to read and reading voraciously. I’ve read enough books about writing to know that most everyone says that reading goes hand in hand with being a good writer.
Do writers read?
Yes and no. Most writers are avid consumers of stories, because that’s usually where the spark and passion for writing comes from. But especially if you have a dayjob, writing and reading can become mutually exclusive.
Are you not reading enough books?
More than a quarter–26 percent–of American adults admit to not having read even part of a book within the past year. That’s according to statistics coming out of the Pew Research Center. If you’re part of this group, know that science supports the idea that reading is good for you on several levels.
Why should people not write a book?
And sometimes an idea many people think is really stupid turns out to be brilliant to a lot of other people (e.g. 50 Shades of Grey sold 100 million copies and I thought it was unreadable). It’s not about the idea for the book. It’s about the motivation behind the book. People should not write a book if they’re doing it for the wrong reasons.
Is it better to read a book or listen to it?
Studies have shown that listening to books offers basically the same intellectual benefits as reading a book. In fact, there are some people who learn better from hearing than through visual stimulation. Take your time. If you’re reading for enjoyment, there is no pressure to read quickly.
Is it possible to be a good writer without reading?
You can’t be a good writer without reading at all, but once you are reading, however little, you are advancing in the right direction. You can figure out the pace you want as you go along.
