Can you switch branches in the military as an officer?

Once one goes on active duty, with the exception of a few commissioned officer specialties (such as a physician), one cannot simply transfer from one branch of the service to another. You have to complete a Request for Conditional Release from your current branch of service.

The Interservice Transfer program, or IST, allows qualified commissioned officers from other Uniformed Services to apply for transfer to active duty in the United States Air Force to fill select critically manned Air Force career fields.

Can I switch from Marines to Army?

You can, but it’s not automatic. You would apply for a release from the Marine Corp in order to join the Army. First, the Army has to indicate they have a slot for you and are willing to take you. Then, the Marines have to agree to let you go.

Can you go officer while enlisted?

Can a US Army officer be qualified in more than one branch?

Can Air Force NCOs give orders to other branches of service?

Yes, they can. However, their orders cannot countermand the legal orders of a superior NCO or officer in your own branch of the service. I worked with members of the Marine Corps on several occasions and the Marine enlisted personnel were given orders by senior ranking US Air Force NCOs and officers all of the time.

Can an officer of another branch join the Marine Corps?

Even Naval Academy and Naval ROTC midshipmen, must specifically apply for, and be accepted into, the Marine Option program, before they can “compete” for a Marine Corps commission – it is not automatic. Therefore, it is rare, although technically possible, for an officer of another branch to directly enter the Marine Corps.

Can the military force you out of the military?

Unfortunately, it doesn’t always work that way, and the military does, from time to time, force people out of the military through involuntary separations and forced retirement. For example, in 2014, the Army forced a group of prior-enlisted active duty officers to retire with 20 years of service or under TERA rules.
