They aren’t something you can wake up and brush off, like you would a nightmare. Often, the hallucinations brought on in a night terror appear entirely real, and adults who experience night terrors can see whatever it is for several minutes after waking up.

How do night terrors manifest?

Signs someone is experiencing a night terror include screaming, crying, moaning, elevated heart rate, panting, and other indications of fear. Though children may open their eyes, talk, and even walk around during a night terror, they do not awaken fully.

“During a sleep terror, a child may scream, talk or cry,” explains pediatric sleep disorders expert Vaishal Shah, MD, MPH. “If the light is on, you can see they’re pale or sweaty. The fight-or-flight response is fully activated.” Sleep terrors may be over in a few seconds or may last several minutes.

What happens during night terrors?

During a night terror, a child might suddenly sit upright in bed and shout out or scream in distress. The child’s breathing and heartbeat might be faster, he or she might sweat, thrash around, and act upset and scared. After a few minutes, or sometimes longer, a child simply calms down and returns to sleep.

Are night terrors neurological?

Night terrors can occur in adults however it is rare. This may be indicative of underlying neurologic disorders that require more work up and investigation.
