Where does cavitation occur in pump?

Cavitation occurs when the liquid in a pump turns to a vapor at low pressure. It occurs because there is not enough pressure at the suction end of the pump, or insufficient Net Positive Suction Head available (NPSHa). When cavitation takes place, air bubbles are created at low pressure.

Why cavitation occurs in centrifugal pump but not in displacement pump?

In centrifugal pumps the eye of the pump impeller is smaller than the flow area of pipe. This decrease in flow area of pump results in increase in flow rate. So pressure drop happened between pump suction and the vanes of the impeller. This air bubbles are transmitted to pump which forms cavitation.

Do positive displacement pumps have NPSHr?

In a centrifugal, the NPSHr varies as a function of flow, which is determined by pressure. In a PD pump, NPSHr varies as a function of flow which is determined by speed. The lower the speed of a PD pump, the lower the NPSHr. At low speed the percentage of slip is higher than at high speed.

How do you prevent cavitation in a well pump?

Placing pump at a point lower than the water level in the tank, in many cases prevents cavitation. Physically install the pump so the water flows into the pump suction inlet smoothly.
