Underrated and Nolan usually don’t belong in a sentence together, but Insomnia is quite a gem of a film. It features great performances by Al Pacino and a nice dramatic role for Robin Williams. It’s the movie where Nolan focuses the most on character development, and I think it really works here.

Why does Christopher Nolan use black and white in his films?

For example, Nolan uses black-and-white not simply because it’s cheaper, but because he knew they’d be limited in how they lit the scenes. When you light in color, that changes the way the film captures the image, and since he was relying heavily on natural light, black-and-white would give him a more controlled image.
