Why museum is important in understanding history?
For centuries, museums have played an integral role in preserving the history of our society. Exhibits tell us stories about how our nation, our communities and our cultures came to be and without them, those stories could be forgotten. Museums serve our communities in a multitude of ways, as we have seen firsthand.
What is the importance of museums in the contemporary era?
Museums have the power to create unity on both a social and political level, but also on a local one. Local museums are able to provide a sense of community and place by celebrating a collective heritage, offering a great way to get to know the history of a particular area.
What do you like most about the Museum of Modern Art?
I like the museum for its extraordinary decoration, war relic collections and mostly the photographs. The photographs were captured by photojournalists of different countries and some of them have donated the photos for common exhibition.
Why should you visit the museum?
Experiences, such as visiting a museum, can also become a meaningful part of one’s identity and contribute to successful social relationships in a manner that material items cannot. So consider foregoing an outing for items that you may not need; going to the museum will make you happier in the long run.
What can we learn from the stories of museum workers?
Their stories give a behind-the-scenes look at the individuals who work at the museum and the meaningful, transformative experiences they have had with art. The fact that so many of these stories are set in childhood or adolescence demonstrates to me how important, enriching, and valuable it is to be exposed to art at an early age.
How should museums manage their cultural legacy?
Museums must remain relevant to a contemporary audience while upholding a mission to preserve human culture for posterity. Daniel Weiss ’85, president of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, explains the challenges and opportunities that come with managing a cultural legacy.
