Do solitary animals feel lonely?

It may be surprising to hear that most animals on earth are solitary. Loneliness is in my opinion, the most common issue in pet animal welfare. Whilst cats are less likely to suffer loneliness, they do experience distress, particularly if they are especially needy and predisposed to anxiety.

Just like people, some animals are gregarious and enjoy being in groups, herds or in pairs throughout their lives, while others prefer solitude, tranquility and being on their own. Do dogs feel lonely when left alone?

As long as human family replaces a pack for a dog, it can suffer when people leave it alone at home. There are even some toys that help to handle pet loneliness (the first thing that comes to mind is Petcube, by the way, the idea is not bad), so I think animals can really feel it.
