Most squadrons have changed names and designations many times over the years, so they are listed by their current designation. To see all USAF squadrons, regardless of active or not, go to the List of United States Air Force squadrons.

Many squadrons either had no nickname or the name is unknown. References vary with two word names or compound word names – Sea Hawks and Seahawks – with the more common use listed. Names appear variously in the singular and plural noun forms – Blue Goose and Blue Geese – with the plural form more common.
