What mixture causes an explosion?

Explosives must contain a fuel and an oxidizer, which provides the oxygen needed to sustain the reaction. A common example is ANFo, a mixture of ammonium nitrate, which acts as the oxidizer, and fuel oil (the fuel source).

Can mixing chemicals cause explosions?

Liquids (such as petrol and other fuels) and solvents in industrial products (such as paint, ink, adhesives and cleaning fluids) give off flammable vapour which, when mixed with air, can ignite or explode.

What kind of chemical reaction is an explosion?

combustion reaction
A chemical explosion is basically a combustion reaction, but not all materials capable of combustion reactions can be used as military explosives.

How is ammonium nitrate made?

Ammonium nitrate is made by reaction of ammonia with nitric acid in water followed by careful evaporation of the water. Ammonia is most often prepared from atmospheric nitrogen, while nitric acid is prepared from the combustion of ammonia, and so ammonium nitrate is most conveniently manufactured where ammonia is made.

What are explosive chemicals?

An explosive chemical is a solid or liquid chemical which is in itself capable by chemical reaction of producing gas at such a temperature and pressure and at such a speed as to cause damage to the surroundings.

What are the main chemicals used in explosives?

COMPOSITION OF BOMBS

Explosives Based on Nitrogen Formula wt \% C
Ammonium picrate (Expl D) C6H6N4O7 29.28
Cyclonite (RDX) C3H6N6O6 16.22
Ethylenediamine dinitrate C2H10N4O6 12.91
Guanidine nitrate CH6N4O3 9.84

What happens when you mix two chemicals?

Mix 2 chemicals: effective collision of reactant molecules at active of threshold energy form bond ace thus products if the reaction is feasible. Else no reaction. Heat 2 chemicals: if the reactants are not in their elemental form they decompose to the best possible products and these react to form many other compounds I’d the reaction is feasible.

What two chemicals make an explosion?

Chemical Explosions. Gunpowder is a mixture of potassium nitrate, carbon, and sulfur. Mixtures of these chemicals (in the correct ratios) can produce a chemical explosion. The potassium nitrate is reduced. The carbon and sulfur are oxidized.

What is created when chemical reactions join together?

Reactions and compounds. New substances are formed bychemical reactions. When elements react together to form compounds their atoms join to other atoms using chemical bonds. For example, iron and sulfur react together to form a compound called iron sulfide.

What chemicals are explosive?

TNT. One of the most commonly known explosive chemicals is trinitrotoluene,or TNT,which has featured extensively in video games and films.

  • TATP. The chemical TATP belongs to a group of molecules named peroxides, which contain weak and unstable oxygen-oxygen bonds, and that are not found in TNT.
