How can I help my child identify letters and numbers?

Here are a few ideas to help keep learning fun.

  1. Read! Books are a great way to help your children learn their letters.
  2. Touch and Learn. Many kids learn through touch and experience.
  3. Alphabet Art. Kids with a creative streak will enjoy these activities.
  4. Eat the Alphabet.
  5. Active Alphabet.

At what age should a child identify letters and numbers?

A: Most children learn to recognize letters between ages 3 and 4. Typically, children will recognize the letters in their name first. By age 5, most kindergarteners begin to make sound-letter associations, such as knowing that “book” starts with the letter B.

What should I teach after alphabet?

Learn to Read: After the ABCs

  • SHORT VOWEL WORDS FOR READING AND SPELLING. Short vowel words are the best place to start.
  • PHONEMIC MANIPULATION. Once rhyming and syllables are under the child’s belt, we want to develop the child’s ear for words and sounds even further.
  • LEARN BASIC SIGHT WORDS.
  • CREATIVE WRITING.
  • READ ALOUDS.

What are the first letters to teach?

First, start with s, a, t, p, i, n. This combination of letters is perfect for introducing letter names and sounds and then actually APPLYING what you are teaching. These letters also make up the most frequent words that are found in emerging readers.

Which letters of the alphabet should be taught first?

What sequence should be used to teach letter-sound correspondence?

  • Letters that occur frequently in simple words (e.g., a, m, t) are taught first.
  • Letters that look similar and have similar sounds (b and d) are separated in the instructional sequence to avoid confusion.
  • Short vowels are taught before long vowels.

Should you teach numbers or letters first?

I generally like to introduce letters first and then introduce numbers a little later. I recommend 3 as a great age to start teaching numbers, but just like letters, there is no pressure to learn them all fast. Your child should be able to count up to 20 and identify numbers 1-10 before kindergarten.
