What determines self-control?

The ability to control our impulses is based in the prefrontal cortex of the brain. This part of the human brain is rich with complex neural connections, allowing us to plan, exert willpower, and achieve our goals.

Why do people struggle with self-control?

Why do some people lack self-control? Many experience ego depletion or lack of willpower and self-discipline. Others fear they will fail at something before they give it a try. Some get comfortable being lazy and rather not put in the necessary effort to achieve a favorable outcome.

Some people loose their self control in anger because they react instead of responding. Normal human beings have stop signal going through their veins naturally like we have a red light for stop in traffic signals. These stop signs or signals help us to control our impulsivity and make us think of the consequence thay may happen if we react.

Of the two dozen character strengths listed in researchers questionnaire to people, self-control was the one that people were least likely to recognize in themselves. Conversely, when people were asked about their failings, a lack of self-control was at the top of the list.
