The Ninth participated in Agricola’s invasion of Caledonia (modern Scotland) in 82–83. According to Tacitus, the legion narrowly escaped destruction when the Caledonians beyond the Forth launched a surprise attack at night on their fort. The Caledonians “burst upon them as they were terrified in their sleep”.
