What is the difference between a sea level engine and a vacuum engine?

Vacuum-optimized engines are more complex and different than sea-level engines; they’re specifically designed to have a higher performance in the vacuum of space. A visible difference between the two engines is that the bell nozzle is larger in the Raptor vacuum engine.

Why don t rockets use variable nozzles?

What is a vacuum Raptor engine?

The Raptor vacuum (or “RVac”) engine is basically a “space” version of the Raptor engines that will lift off from Earth underneath the Super Heavy booster. SpaceX has posted a dramatic video of the first firing of its Raptor vacuum engine integrated onto a Starship prototype. One of these is a standard Raptor engine designed to lift off from Earth, while the other is Raptor “vacuum” variant, which is optimized to operate in space.

As for in a vacuum, there is very little ambient pressure, so the exhaust air expands much more as compared to its expansion at sea level. This means that, when you use the same nozzle as the one at sea level, the exhaust plume would continue to expand further than the walls of the nozzle – reducing efficiencies.

The main consideration is that in vacuum there is no atmospheric pressure fighting the engine thrust. It’s true this back pressure changes the optimal expansion ratio, but that’s not the fundamental reason that vacuum thrust is always larger than sea-level thrust.
