How can you tell the age of your hermit crab?
Look at the size of your hermit crab. For most crab keepers, a hermit crab that is about the size of a golf ball is going to be about 10 years old. One that is about the size of a mandarin orange is going to be greater than 10 years. Crabs that are much larger than this may be upward of 30 years old.
How long will a hermit crab stay buried?
The time it takes for a crab to complete a molt varies. As a general rule, the larger the crab, the longer the whole process will take. It is not unusual for an average-sized crab to spend about four to eight weeks going through the whole process, during which time it may stay completely buried in the sand.
How can you tell if a hermit crab is still alive?
If is it hollow and crumbles easily, it is an old exoskeleton. Look inside the nearby shell, and you might find a freshly-molted crab hiding out. If the immobile crab is obviously not an exoskeleton, try picking it up to see if it moves. If it does not react, it’s probably dead.

Do hermit crabs need salt water?
Hermit crabs require both freshwater and saltwater water sources to survive. Saltwater should be made using sea salt sold for marine fish and crustaceans. The water dishes should be big enough for your hermit crabs to submerge themselves in, but not so deep that they can drown.
Why did my new hermit crab bury itself?
In nature, land hermit crabs bury to protect themselves during the stressful time of molting. By digging a “cave” below ground they are able to obtain extended darkness which triggers the release of the molting hormone (MH) which in turn causes the shedding process to begin.
Can I eat my hermit crab?
Any size hermit crab can be cooked and eaten, but small hermit crabs do not have much meat on them, so it may not be worth shelling it to eat. It is best to cook larger hermit crab that are at least 4-inches wide, to get a decent amount of meat.
Can a hermit crab survive without a shell?
Your hermit crab’s shell provides a protective barrier around its sensitive exoskeleton. Without a shell, it leaves your hermit crab completely vulnerable to heat, light, and air. They can quickly die without it. It is common for crabs to leave their shell while molting.
What is the largest hermit crab?
diogenes (commonly referred to as the giant hermit crab) happens to be the largest of the hermit crabs discovered (Wood and Wood, 2000), with a body up to 30 cm long.
