Why a long length of Nichrome wire has more resistance to a current than a short one of the same thickness?

The moving electrons can collide with the ions in the metal. This makes it more difficult for the current to flow, and causes resistance. The resistance of a long wire is greater than the resistance of a short wire because electrons collide with more ions as they pass through.

Why does a wire made of nichrome glow while as a copper wire does not?

The heating element of an electric heater is made of an alloy which has high resistance whereas the cord is made of copper metal which has very very low resistance…now, the heating element of an electric heater made of nichrome glows because it becomes red hot due to the large amount of heat produced on passing …

Which wire has higher resistance nichrome or copper?

Obviously Nichrome because resistivity of Nichrome is greater than that of Copper. As mention above, both wires are of same length and having same cross section area. Therefore resistance of Nichrome wire will be more than that of Copper. Since more resistance means more I^2R loss (which is dissipated as heat).

What is the relationship between resistance and length?

The relation between length and resistivity is given by the resistivity formula. Resistance is directly proportional to the length. This means that any change in length of the material will change its value of resistance.

Which has more resistivity and why long Nichrome wire or a short Nichrome wire?

(a) Since the resistivity of a conductor is directly proportional to its length a long piece of nichrome wire will have more resistance as compared to the short piece of nichrome.

Why does a wire made of Nichrome?

Nichrome, a non-magnetic 80/20 alloy of nickel and chromium, is the most common resistance wire for heating purposes because it has a high resistivity and resistance to oxidation at high temperatures.

Why does the connecting wires of an electric heater does not glow while the heating element does?

The heater’s heating element is made up of an alloy that has very high resistance, so when current flows through the heating element, it becomes too hot and glows red. But the cord’s resistance, which is usually of copper or aluminium, is low, so it does not glow.

Why does nichrome wire heat up?

Nichrome due to its high resistivity does not allow the electric energy easily to pass through it. This electrical energy is changed into heat energy. So nichrome wire gets heated in an electric circuit.

Why is nichrome wire used in heater?

Uses. Because of its low cost of manufacture, strength, ductility, resistance to oxidation, stability at high temperatures, and resistance to the flow of electrons, nichrome is widely used in electric heating elements in applications such as hair dryers and heat guns.

What is difference between copper wire and nichrome wire?

Among the two wires having similar length and radius, Nichrome wire gets heated up more as compared wire since resistivity of Nichrome is more than that of Copper. Also, Nichrome wire is a good conductor of current and have very less resistance, so it will heat sooner as compared to Copper.

Why does nichrome have a high resistance?

These differences of the crystal lattices either allow smooth flow of electrons as in copper or scattering as in nichrome. Scattering is the dominant effect that leads to the higher resistance, combined with the basic differences in constituent conductivities.

What is the difference between nichrome wire and copper wire?

We know that nichrome is an alloy whereas copper is a metal and it is known that the resistivity of alloy is greater than the resistivity of metal. This means that resistance of nichrome wire ( Rn) is greater than the resistance of copper wire ( Rc) So more the resistance of a wire, more will be heat generated in it.

Why does nichrome have higher resistance than pure copper?

But there’s more to the reason for higher resistance. The manner in which the three elements make up the nichrome alloy results in grain boundaries, dislocations and voids that interrupt the crystal lattice of the alloy which for pure copper is much more uniform.

Which type of wire gets heated up more?

Nichrome wire gets heated up more. We know that nichrome is an alloy whereas copper is a metal and it is known that the resistivity of alloy is greater than the resistivity of metal. This means that resistance of nichrome wire ( Rn) is greater than the resistance of copper wire ( Rc)

What happens when two wires of the same length are connected together?

So when we connect two wires of the same length together in series, one of nichrome and the other of copoer, the resistance of the nichrome wire will be very high compared to the same length of copper wire. In a series circuit, the same current will pass through the two wires.
