What is a F1 Halo made of?

The F1 halo is made from Grade 5 titanium which is used extensively in aerospace and is renowned for its remarkable strength, stiffness and low density. As a result of this, the halo is strong enough to support the weight of two African elephants yet sturdy enough to deflect a large, fully-loaded, suitcase at 225kph!

How do drivers see past the Halo?

As an observer, Halo looks to be quite intrusive, but the general consensus among the drivers so far is that in the cockpit, it isn’t an issue. The middle portion is thin so eyes tend to focus past it, while the thicker halo part is largely above the field of vision.

The halo is made of titanium and weighed around 7 kilograms (15 lb) in the version presented in 2016, then rose to 9 kilograms (20 lb) in 2017. The system is not developed by the teams, but is manufactured by three approved external manufacturers chosen by the FIA and has the same specification for all vehicles.
