Where did the idea of kings and queens come from?

The concept of royalty is centuries old. It originated with the feudal systems of medieval Europe. Under feudalism, there were a few very powerful landowners who acquired large amounts of territory through military force or purchase. These landowners became high-ranking lords, and one of them was crowned king.

How did kings keep control in medieval times?

During the Middle Ages kings were expected to lead their men into battle. In order to maintain control, kings often claimed they were given the right to rule by God. This made the approval of the church and the pope very important.

They were ruled by kings or queens. The earliest monarchies that we know about are the ones in Sumer and Egypt. These both began around 3000 BC. But it was not only the early states which had kings and queens.

Kings collected money in a number of ways. One way was to go to war and pillage other lands. Other ways included fees charged to their lords and taxes levied on the people. Some lords paid the king “shield money” instead of going to war. This way the king could hire his own soldiers for war.
